eBay Inc. (rendered as ebay) is an American multinational internet consumer-to-consumer corporation that manages eBay.com, an online auction and shopping website in which people and businesses buy and sell a broad variety of goods and services worldwide. Founded in 1995, eBay is one of the notable success stories of the dot-com bubble; it is now a multi-billion dollar business with operations localized in over thirty countries. eBay expanded from its original "set-time" auction format to include "Buy It Now" standard shopping; shopping by UPC, ISBN, or other kind of SKU (via Half.com); online classified advertisements (via Kijiji or eBay Classifieds); online event ticket trading (via StubHub); online money transfers (via PayPal and other services.

eBay continues to generate profit even with many competitors in the tech savvy world of 2012. According to Yahoo Finance eBay's main competitors are Amazon and Overstock.com. These two other similar companies battle eBay for everyday market share in the 'Catalog and Mail Order Houses' industry.

Why eBay is Fun and Convenient

• eBay was created in September 1995, by a man called Pierre Omidyar, who was living in San Jose. His net worth today is roughly $10 billion.

• The site was launched on Labor Day, Monday, 4 September 1995, under the more prosaic title of “Auction Web”

• Auction Web was later renamed to “eBay”, after Echo Bay, Omidyar’s consulting firm, when “echobay.com” was unavailable.

• Over 30,000 NEW and USED clothing, footwear, & accessory items are sold every day on eBay.

• The most expensive item ever sold on eBay was a 405-foot, steel mega-yacht (marketed as a Gigayacht) auctioned by the Fort. Lauderdale. The yacht was offered up for auction on eBay November 3rd, 2006 with a ‘buy now’ price of $85 million. The price paid your 50% deposit of the full purchase price of $168,000,000.00 total.

• eBay users worldwide trade more than $1,839 worth of goods on the site every second

• 95% of eBay’s sellers are individuals or small businesses.

• Over 30,000 NEW and USED clothing, footwear, & accessory items are sold every day on eBay.

• eBay slogan is ‘What ever it is, you can get it on eBay’.

• A golf foursome with Master Champion Tiger Woods sold for $425,000.

• In July, 2002 eBay acquired PayPal, for $1.5 billion in stock.

With the acquisition of PayPal, eBay and their users are now able to pay for their products/ receive payments for their products right away. This helped speed up the process and gave customers more options on how to pay for their products.
