Buxfer's mission is to build an online and mobile money management tool that is easy to use, yet powerful enough to effect necessary changes in people's money habits. Buxfer believe's there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to managing money. They believe a good money manager doesn't simply mean automatically generating pretty charts. A good money manager adapts to a user's needs, gives them control and flexibility to customize it as needed, and delivers insightful, actionable advise to help plan for the future.

Historic Development of Personal Financial Tools

The evolution of personal financial tools to track expense, income and make personal budgets dates back to Microsoft Money coming out in 1991. The software was available for purchase in conjunction with Windows 3 and Microsoft Office. The software allowed you to upload bank account balances, create budgets, and track expenses. In 1998 Microsoft added an internet component to the software for online banking and stock trading, so real time updates were now possible. Microsoft discontinued the software and accompanying website in stages between 2009 and 2011 due to a lack of demand.

Quicken was the next released personal financial software, and it was released in 1996 for use on Windows 1995. Quicken attempted to differentiate itself from Microsoft Money by offering varying versions of software that increases with complexity of tools and cost. Quicken's higher end software offers tax planning guidance and tax preparation help. Quicken also has a website that supports its software for real-time interactions. Quicken's online reach has expanded greatly with the acquisition of Mint.com in 2009.

Mint.com was founded in 2005 by Aaron Patzer who wanted to make financial planning and budgeting easier for himself and the masses. Mint is a free to use online and mobile app that traces bank statements, credit card statements, investments, and loan transactions and balances in an easy to use user interface. The user interface allows you to make budgets, set savings goals, and find additional savings in your current budget. Mint was sold to Quicken in 2009, and now also supports Quickens software.

Buxfer was founded in 2006 by Ashwin Bharambe and Shashank Pandit to track expenses between friends and to easily split bills like rent and utilities between friends as well. It has since grown into a full fledge financial planning website with social media features as well.
